The Only Begotten Son

Who is Jesus Christ? Some would say that he is the Son of God. Others would say that he was the son of Mary and Joseph. Both are true – Jesus is the Son of God whom Mary bore in her womb that made him the Son of Man. It was when Mary and Joseph were about get married, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to tell Mary that she will be giving birth to the Son of God whose name will be Jesus. According to the gospel of Matthew, “This is how Jesus Christ was born. A young woman named Mary was engaged to Joseph from King David’s family. But before they were married, she learned that she was going to have a baby by God’s Holy Spirit…Then Joseph named him Jesus.”

So if Jesus is the Son of God and also of Man, does it mean that he is 50% man and 50% God? No! Jesus is 100% God. He is the Son of God, the prince of heaven, the Lord over all the earth. Jesus is the only begotten Son of God. But Jesus was 100% man when he lived here on earth.

Why did Jesus have to be man? Why did Jesus have to be given birth to by a virgin woman when he can just go down on earth and live among the humans if he wanted to? The plan was for Jesus to save and redeem mankind from the consequences of sin. John said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Imagine the sacrifice both God the Father and Jesus the Son made just so you can have the gift of salvation and eternal life? God the Father let go of His one and only Son Jesus so he can be crucified on the cross and pay the penalty of sin. Jesus, in his obedience to God the Father, accepted and fulfilled his mission. He temporarily took out his robe as prince of heaven and took on the cloak of a man to become the perfect substitute for mankind. Jesus, the Son of God and prince of heaven became the Son of man just to save the underserving humans from eternal damnation because of sin. This is who Jesus was before, who Jesus is today, and who Jesus will be become tomorrow – the Son of God who redeems and save the world. The bible says that “Jesus Christ never changes! He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
